Tree Trimming & Pruning in Northwest Indiana
Clear the roof, lift low limbs, remove deadwood and storm-proof your trees, done by a local tree service that knows good pruning from hacking.
Why trim a tree
Good pruning keeps a tree healthy and keeps it from becoming a problem. The common reasons homeowners in The Region call:
- Roof and gutter clearance. Limbs rubbing shingles or dumping leaves in the gutters.
- Deadwood removal. Dead branches are the first to come down in a storm.
- Raising the canopy. Lifting low limbs over the driveway, sidewalk or lawn.
- Thinning. Opening up a dense crown so wind passes through instead of catching it like a sail.
- Young-tree structure. Pruning a young tree early prevents weak, split-prone forks later.
Good pruning vs. bad pruning
“Topping” (cutting the whole top off a tree) is widely discouraged by arborists because it leads to weak regrowth and decay. A good tree service makes cuts at the branch collar, removes only what’s needed, and can explain why each limb is coming off. Ask how much of the canopy they plan to take.
When to prune
Many trees are pruned in late fall through winter while dormant, when it’s easier to see the branch structure. Deadwood and hazard limbs can come off any time. Some species have timing concerns (oaks, for example, are often pruned outside the spring and early-summer window to reduce disease risk), so ask the pro about your specific trees.
Trees near power lines
Don’t trim near energized lines yourself and don’t ask a general crew to. Line clearance is handled by the utility; contact NIPSCO.
