Trees in Lake and Porter County deal with a lot: hard freezes, heavy wet snow, lake-effect wind off Lake Michigan and strong summer thunderstorms. A tree service that works here every season knows what to look for:
- Dead and dying ash trees. Emerald ash borer has killed most untreated ash trees in Indiana. Purdue Extension warns that dead ash becomes brittle and can drop limbs even in light wind, so it should be removed promptly (Purdue EAB FAQ).
- Storm-weakened limbs. Cracked leaders, hanging branches and split trunks are often easier and safer to deal with before the next storm than after.
- Trees near houses and lines. Removing a tree close to a roof, fence or garage takes rigging and careful planning. Any tree touching power lines is a job for the utility, not a homeowner or general tree crew.
- Stumps and roots. Grinding below grade lets you replant, re-sod or pour over the spot. Call Indiana 811 before any grinding near buried lines.
- Who owns the tree. Trees in the strip between the sidewalk and the street are often the town’s responsibility. Check with your town before you cut one.

What a good tree service estimate should include
Exactly what gets cut
Which trees or limbs, how much of the canopy is coming out on a trim, and whether the stump is included or priced separately.
Cleanup and haul-away
Whether brush is chipped and hauled, logs are cut to length or removed, and the stump grindings are taken away or left to backfill the hole.
Proof of insurance
Ask for a current certificate of liability insurance (and workers’ comp if they have employees) before anyone climbs. A tree falling the wrong way is expensive.
Credentials, if you want them
Indiana doesn’t license tree workers (Indiana Arborist Association). If you want an ISA Certified Arborist, ask, or check the ISA Find an Arborist directory.
